Frequently Asked Questions
When do I need to register as self-employed with HMRC?
You must register for Self Assessment with HMRC if your gross trade income exceeds £1,000 in a tax year. This is income before expenses.
What expenses can I claim as a sole trader?
You can claim any business expense that is "wholly and exclusively" for business purposes. Essentially, if you would purchase it regardless if you completed the trade or not, then it is likely not a tax-deductible expense. Some exceptions are mobile phone costs (if apportioned), home working allowance and
Should I stay self-employed or set up a Limited Company?
It depends on your current profitability, growth plans, and risk profile. Generally, operating as a Limited Company becomes tax-efficient at higher profit levels, but it comes with additional compliance requirements. We can evaluate your exact numbers to help you decide.
What are the main Self Assessment deadlines I need to know?
The tax year runs from 6 April 2025 - 5 April 2026 and so on.
For the 25/26 tax year your key deadlines are:
5 October 2026: Deadline to register for Self Assessment with HMRC if you are newly self-employed or have new untaxed income.
31 January 2027: The major deadline to file your online tax return AND pay any balancing tax owed for the previous tax year.
